I have been an archaeological illustrator, working in Greece, Cyprus, and Turkey for the past ten years. I have worked with material dating to the Bronze Age through to the late Roman period. My expertise is in ceramic illustration and I have also worked with metal, ivory, gold, glass, terracotta, bone, flint, and wooden artifacts. My initial drawings are made in pencil, which I then scan and ink digitally. My work has been used in several publications, conference presentations, and online forums. Future publications are currently in progress.
Archaeological illustration is an important aspect of excavation research and publication. Artifact illustrations highlight aspects of the archaeological material in a way that no other media can. Ceramic illustrations are the most common and helpful as they showcase interior dimensions, reconstructed decoration and shapes, as well as rim, body, and base features of the pottery that are paramount for dating purposes. Furthermore, illustrations add a visual component to published reports that help to explain the researcher’s arguments in a clear and pleasing way.
Beyond artifact illustration, I also prepare digital publication layouts, create line drawings of vase painting, develop innovative and dynamic maps and architectural plans. Other graphic design work includes book cover, website, and business card illustrations.
